Episode 6: How to Make the Move from One Platform to the Next with Andrea Buchanan

If there’s one thing writer/producer/director Andrea Buchanan knows, it’s how to be a change agent. Andrea was a force behind some of the most successful television shows on TV, including VH1’s “Behind the Music.” She then moved into film, co-directing an award-winning short film with Jennifer Aniston — and didn’t stop there. Andrea made the switch to author and penned her first book, Note to Self, this past year. It includes inspirational stories and anecdotes from thirty dynamic women, including some of the most successful and celebrated women in entertainment such as Mariska Hargitay and Sheryl Crow. Not surprisingly, this talented ace of change has since added “speaker” to the mix — she’s spoken on life and inspiration at dozens of high profile events and has a dizzying schedule of talks and appearances to come. When it comes to moving from one platform to the next, Andrea has the right formula. This week, Patricia and I sat down with this incredible business chameleon to find out how entrepreneurs and executives can make similar leaps in their own lives and business. Her tips:

1. Network, Network, Network: To make the move into something new, start networking. Keep business cards, be sure to follow up, stay in touch.

2. Take Risks: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! When Andrea saw one of her favorite columnists on an airplane, she took a chance on talking to her and it worked!

3. Know Your Skills Translate: If you’re a good writer in marketing, you’ll probably be a good writer of articles or books. Skills can cross over to a variety of areas.

What are YOUR tips for making the move to a new platform? We (and the other entrepreneurs) would love to hear your insight below in the comments section!
